What the – ?

With a nod to Dimitri, who posted about this yesterday, the National Archives is preparing to “unveil” a newly-discovered document in Lincoln’s hand that’s hailed as a “significant find.”  And apparently it’s war related.  Hhmm.

Maybe Abe writes about how much he really hated Grant.  Or that Meade handled the retreat from Gettysburg correctly.  Or….

Ah well, we’ll know soon enough when we get to see the thing tomorrow (Thursday).  Stay tuned.  See the Washington Times article here.

  1. J.D.,

Or that he really did write the Gettysburg Address on the back of an envelope. 🙂

Look forward to seeing just what it is.

  2. J.D.,

You guessed correctly. Handwritten letter to Halleck on July 7, 1863 urging him to get Meade going as if Lee could be pushed the rebellion could soon be over.

Hard to believe a letter like that was just lying around in a batch of papers down there, but it is truly a wonderful find.

    Hope all is well.

  3. Yep – well, at least now we have the original missive in Abe’s hand, which is cool. I think everyone was hoping for some new blockbuster info, but this ain’t bad.
