I spoke yesterday with Mr. Dana Shoaf, editor of America’s Civil War Magazine. He related to me that after my most recent article, “Annihilation of a Regiment” about the 6th U.S. Cavalry’s July 3, 1863 fight at Fairfield PA (July issue) appeared, he received a letter from a reader who owns a unique item. It’s the 6th U.S. commander’s personal sidearm – Major Samuel “Old Paddy” Starr’s Colt revolver, with his name engraved on the backstrap. Dana also tells me that the handle has three notches engraved in it.
Dana is going to run a photo of the gun in an upcoming issue (I believe the next one – September issue). Be sure to pick up a copy of that one to see it!
